Jonathan Lethem Will Launch NYC Event

Novelist Jonathan Lethem (Chronic City, Motherless Brooklyn) will be in New York City on December 21st for a joint launch of his new book Deep Focus: They Live and a screening of the 1988 John Carpenter film, They Live, on which the book comments. Actor, humorist and author John Hodgman (best known as the PC to Justin Long’s Mac) will moderate the evening.

Deep Focus: They Live launches a new series from Soft Skull Press that takes a fresh approach to film books. “Take the smartest, liveliest writers in contemporary letters and let them loose on the most vital and popular corners of cinema history: midnight movies, the New Hollywood of the sixties and seventies, film noir, screwball comedies, international cult classics, and more. Passionate and idiosyncratic, each volume of Deep Focus is long-form criticism that’s relentlessly provocative and entertaining.”

It’s appropriate to begin a series with this sort of thrust with Jonathan Lethem’s look at Carpenter’s paranoid satire, They Live. Out soon: Deep Focus: Death Wish by Christopher Sorrentino (Trance, Sound on Sound). Library Journal’s take on the new series is classic and worth repeating: “A hipster-smart series for the bad-ass intellectual or subversive film student.” What’s not to like?

Tickets for the December 21st event are $13 general admission, $9 seniors, $8 IFC Center members, and are available at the IFC Center box office at 323 Avenue of the Americas (at West 3rd St.) or online at www.ifccenter.com.
